New Zealand: Sustainable environmental protection through old knowledge
Maori children enthusiastic about German peace movement
Just under an hour’s drive from Auckland, the small Maori school Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o te Puaha o Waikato had its first German visit. Members of the light-awareness peace community met the young natives of New Zealand at the traditional welcoming ceremony at equal level. The aim of the support provided by the Germans is to preserve the traditional, appreciative treatment of nature while at the same time becoming modern and future-proof.

For a long time, the indigenous people of New Zealand, the Maori, have been fighting for their rights. The fact that Te Reo Maori – the Maori language – has been the national language since 1987 requires a rethink in the education of Maori children. For two generations the Maori were not allowed to speak their own language. English became the official language, and many Maori no longer communicated in their own language at home, which threatened to disappear.
Now, Maori schools teach children of mostly poorer families in language. Tradition, craft and art are also part of the curriculum. Of course, preparation for secondary school is also part of the teaching plan.
The light-awareness peace community consciously supports the preservation of the culture of the indigenous people of New Zealand. Through them the primal spiritual connection to the earth and nature is still given. This wisdom can enable a natural and sustainable economy in New Zealand. To preserve it and to expand it for the future is supported by the German peace movement.
In the garden of the Marae, the traditional meeting place of the Maori, they sang, laughed together and celebrated the birthday of a young pupil. The Maori children now enthusiastically sing a daily peace song that the guests brought with them. In so doing, they feel their connection to a culture that initially seems foreign. The small Maoris were able to perceive: We are all members of a large peace family. So, understanding for each other and peace with each other can increase.
